Nursing Home Abuse
Despite the enactment of federal and state laws against elder abuse, caretakers victimize millions of elderly Americans each year. Since many elderly people are unaware that a caretaker has taken advantage of them or are incapable of expressing their own concerns, friends and family members who visit must be attentive of the warning signs of abuse and neglect.
Frequent bruises may be a sign of physical abuse. If a nursing home resident sustains recurring bruises, a caretaker may be inflicting those injuries on him or her. Even when asked about those bruises, your loved one may be too frightened of his or her caretaker to report the abuse. Also, ask if your friend or family member is suffering from bedsores. Bedsores are a sign of neglect which, if left untreated, may cause life-threatening infections.
If your loved one has been victimized by his or her caretaker, it's likely that other elderly people in the same nursing home have been abused as well. We may be able to help.
